CHARACTERS

~*~*~*~*~*~

These are the main characters from the anime and from volumes 1-8 of the manga.   (The anime is based on storylines from vols 1, 2, 3, 7 and 8 of the manga.)   I haven't included Tsuzuki's shikigami here, as only four of them (Suzaku, SohRyu, Byakko and Touda) appear in the anime and the corresponding volumes of the manga.   The shikigami feature much more prominently in vol 9 onwards.   For information about the shikigami, further character information and translations of the manga to date, visit Theria.net.

~*~*~*~*~*~

Tsuzuki Asato

Area 2 shinigami. Born 24th Feb 1900, died age 26.

Tsuzuki is Yami no Matsuei's main character and a powerful shinigami who, most of the time, seems anything but. He appears on the surface to be a happy-go-lucky, cheerful and lazy klutz, obsessed with food, particularly sweets. However, he is also very sensitive and caring, and is burdened by guilt and self-hatred from not only his life but from working as a shinigami.

Special abilities: Is JuOhCho's strongest Jufu magic user and can summon 12 shikigami.
Kurosaki Hisoka

Area 2 shinigami. Born 18th October 1980, died age 16

Tsuzuki's current partner, and the only one who has stayed with him for any length of time. Hisoka is snappish, unfriendly and rejecting on the surface, but we soon learn that not only did he have the life from hell and a horrible death but also that he is an empath, and that close contact with others means that their emotions will flood through him.

Special abilities: Healing; defence; empathy
Tatsumi Seiichirou

Shokan division secretary. Born 27th Dec, year unknown, died age 29

EnMaCho's secretary, whose motto is "Time is Money". Tatsumi comes over initially as cool, reserved, strong and efficient, but is far from unemotional. He has a soft spot for Tsuzuki. Like Tsuzuki, he is carrying a huge burden of guilt over from his life.

Special ability: he is a kagetsukai, a shadow-magic user
Watari Yutaka

Area 6 shinigami. Born 18th April 1953, died age 24.

A highly intelligent scientist with a cheerful and lively demeanour, Watari appears to be the least-troubled of the four main shinigami. In the anime, this is probably the case; in the manga, there are hints that there is more to Watari than meets the eye. He has a small owl, 003, who likes to sit on his shoulder.

Special ability: he can bring drawings to life.
Konoe

In charge of EnMaCho's Shokan division. Born 12th June, year unknown.

Konoe is the one person who has been working in the Shokan division longer than Tsuzuki. We learn very little about him in the anime, beyond that he, like Tsuzuki, has a sweet tooth, but in the manga we discover that he has a fondness for singing Karaoke - very badly!
Gushoshin

Librarian, birthday and age unknown.

The two Gushoshin are brothers who look alike except for the colour of their outfits. Hard-working and efficient, they work as EnMaCho's librarians and help out on casework by researching data.
Muraki Kazutaka

Doctor, Born 4th Dec 1964, still alive (as far as we know!)

Muraki works as a doctor in a Tokyo hospital, dresses all in white (bar his blood-red earrings) and is a charming, intelligent, polite and sophisticated serial killer who wants Tsuzuki's body in more ways than one. Although Muraki is theoretically human, he has supernatural abilities and seems able to cheat death. He had an unhappy and disturbing childhood, and collects dolls, a hobby that makes sense in the context of his childhood and his attitude to human life.

Special abilities: Where do I start??
Mibu Oriya

Brothel-owner

No information is available about Oriya's birthdate, but it seems safe to assume that he and Muraki are of a similar age, since they were students together. Oriya is Muraki's close friend, and although he disapproves of Muraki's behaviour, he remains loyal to him. Oriya runs KoKakuRou, a high-class restaurant-cum-brothel in Kyoto.
Kannuki Wakaba

Area 4 shinigami. Born 9th May, year unknown.

Terazuma Hajime's partner. Wakaba appears only briefly in the anime, but she plays a larger part in the manga. She is a nice-natured girl, and one of her specialities seems to be baking cakes. She is a miko and a gatekeeper of GenSouKai, the digital space in which the shikigami reside when not called upon for battle. Like the other gatekeepers, she has differently-coloured eyes.

Special abilities: Can sense the future, albeit not in detail; restores Terazuma to his human form if he transforms.
Terazuma Hajime

Area 4 shinigami. Born 31st July, year unknown. Died at age 28?

A former detective and the one shinigami that Tsuzuki really does not get on with. Terazuma appears very little in the anime, but in the manga, he and Tsuzuki trade insults and occasionally cause chaos between them. He seems resentful of Tsuzuki, and is generally brusque and not given to displays of affection.

Special abilities: Unluckily for him and for anyone or anything nearby at the time, he transforms if he comes into physical contact with a woman.
HakuShaku (The Earl)

HakuShaku is the slightly mysterious and exceedingly lecherous Earl of the Castle of Candles. Each candle represents a human life, and HakuShaku extinguishes a candle when a person's time is up. He is usually invisible, so all we see of him are his mask and gloves. He does have a human bodily form, which we only catch a glimpse of in the manga. HakuShaku would love to get into Tsuzuki's pants, a feeling that is most definitely *not* reciprocated! ^^;;
Watson

Watson is Hakushaku's servant, a zombie, and a gardener from England.
Maria Wong

Singer/vampire. Appears only in the Nagasaki arc.

Maria is a singer from Hong Kong whose stepmother is only interested in her for the money she makes. In despair, Maria takes her own life, not realising the lengths her stepmother will go to in order to retain her income.
Minase Hijiri

Schoolboy/violinist. Appears only in the Devils Trill arc.

Hijiri is a talented violinist whose life is turned upside down when he receives a cornea transplant. Unknown to him at the time, the cornea, which previously belonged to Otonashi Tatsuya, contains a contract with a demon.

Yes, he does look like Hisoka. No, they're not related.
Otonashi Kazusa

Daughter of Otonashi Tatsuya. Appears only in the Devil's Trill arc.

Kazusa's father was a violinist and is the donor of Hijiri's new cornea. When Hijiri loses his own violin in a fire at school, Kazusa gives him her father's violin, unaware that the violin is cursed...

Special abilities: She can see the true form of demons.
Kakyouin Tsubaki

Appears only in the King of Swords arc.

Tsubaki, usually known by her nickname of 'Tsubaki-hime' is the daughter of the head of the Kakyouin Group, a rapidly expanding company. The Kakyouin Group own a luxury cruise liner, the Queen Camellia, but there are rumours that this vessel is used for some kind of smuggling.
Torii Saya

Area 9 shinigami. Born 17th September, year unknown.

Saya and her partner Yuma are the shinigami for Hokkaido. They are snowed in for much of the year, therefore cannot leave their station very often. This is no doubt a relief to Hisoka, as they behave like rabid fangirls around him, and would love to see him dolled up in a pretty dress! ^^;; Both girls are friendly and affectionate in a bubbly, over-the-top manner.

Note: Saya and Yuma only feature in the manga.
Fukiya Yuma

Area 9 shinigami. Born 25th July, year unknown.

(See information about Torii Saya.)
Akamine Chizuru

Area 1 shinigami. Born 5th February, year unknown.

Chizuru used to be a policewoman, and continues to wear her uniform while on duty as a shinigami because it had been her dream to become a police officer, and the uniform is invested with the pride and confidence she had in her work.

Like Saya and Yuma, Chizuru only appears in the manga.

Special ability: Superhuman strength.
