MUSE ON THE CHARACTERS' SEXUALITY

by
Starza

Well, my sister and I were talking one night and we came to a few conclusions about some of the characters. This is basically a muse on the characters sexuality. Mainly, the 5 mains of our wonderful series. ^_^;;

Reference:   homosexual = gay;  heterosexual = straight;  bisexual = bi

Tsuzuki
He's bi. Definitely. He shows an interest in both males and females. Now before I get jumped, anyone read the manga? Remember volume two, before the Devil's Trill? It's entitled 'Last Waltz'. Tsuzuki and Hisoka are on a case. Hisae, a girl of 19, was supposed to have died, but she hasn't. So Tsuzuki and Hisoka go to investigate.

During this case, though, it seems Tsuzuki gets really attached to her and yes, he loved her as well. Proof? Here's a sniplit, via Theria's translation site:

Hisoka: "------you told me before."
Hisoka: "That the feelings you held for her were respect."
Hisoka: "And not love...."
Tsuzuki: "---------....."
Hisoka: "Liar."

Hisoka KNEW that Tsuzuki was lying (He IS an empath, after all). So in a way, Tsuzuki did love her. But what type of love, we really can't be certain. And was he projecting his feelings for his sister, Ruka onto her as well? Another sniplit of this:

Tsuzuki: "When I was alive....I had a very important person..."
Tsuzuki: As if we were born from the separated pieces of one soul
Tsuzuki: Both of us unable to exist without the other
Tsuzuki: "But"
Tsuzuki: "I couldn't do anything for that person."
Tsuzuki: "I could only watch them die..."
Tsuzuki: "-------running away like a coward."
Tsuzuki: "So when I saw you, never giving up your life so you could do something for your brother"
Tsuzuki: "I thought to wait a bit."
Tsuzuki: The courage to not escape but to stand up against everything....... I wanted to help you
Tsuzuki: "I wanted to help you, even if it was for a selfish reason."

We assume that Tsuzuki is talking about his sister, but... it's not specific. Who IS he talking about here????

After re-reading this, I knew Tsuzuki had to be bi. Oh, of COURSE he likes males. He HAD some relationship with Tatsumi in the past, deeper than normal (They're fairly close if you read manga volume 5 and volume 7 and 8, especially when Tatsumi is with Tsuzuki). And he's attracted to Hisoka as well (In the first manga, he wondered how it would be like to kiss him. >.>). He's always playfully teasing him and 'giving excuses' to touch him.

Even if you interpret Tatsumi/Tsuzuki relationship as family, you honestly can't with Tsuzuki/Hisoka. It just goes beyond family love and friendship.

Which is why my sister and I came to the conclusion: Tsuzuki loves everyone around him. It's just how he is. Gentle, yet emotionally unstable.

So in this case, Tsuzuki is bisexual.

Hisoka
Actually, he could be totally gay or bi. I don't think for a SECOND that Hisoka could be straight. >.> Why do I say he could be bi or not? Hisoka doesn't show any interest in the opposite gender, except with Tsubaki-hime.

Obviously, Hisoka feels SOMETHING for his partner that goes beyond friendship. Come ON! You don't risk your life for a 'just a friend' and confess that you 'need them' in your life to go on living or that no matter WHERE they go, you'll ALWAYS be beside them unless you generally care/love them.

With Tsubaki-hime, however... it's REALLY unclear. I tend to think he cared about her very deeply. Perhaps love? I honestly don't know. It's a real toss-up. But after she died, Hisoka never really showed an interest in any other girl that I saw. (In a sick way, he might fear females, thanks to Saya and Yuma, our favorite fangirls. :D)

It's fairly unclear, but he's either one of those.

Me, I'm still undecided. I think at this point that I'll say he's gay. I don't think he 'loved' Tsubaki-hime in that deep way, he may have THOUGHT he did (hence her speech). But Hisoka shows no interest in females and considering he's at that age... >.>

Conclusion: For now, Hisoka is gay.

Tatsumi
This is VERY hard to say because Tatsumi can be bi or straight *gasp* depending how you view his relationship with Tsuzuki.

Tatsumi DOES show an interest in women, he's just uncomfortable around them. I think this is stated in the manga somewhere (Unfortunately, I can't find WHERE). But at least THIS part says he's interested in women.

Tatsumi: "A girl or a boy, as long as it is the child with the woman I truly love, I'd be happy with either."

Previously, in this conversation, Tatsumi brings up an issue to Watari about having children. He COULD be really hypothetically speaking, as he claims. :X But I don't know if he really is or not).

So he could be straight.

He could be bi too. With the manga reference, he obviously likes girls. But his relationship with Tsuzuki... It could be love, it might only be family love (projecting his feelings for his mother onto him). I tend to think that he cares about Tsuzuki a LOT deeper than we think, but he keeps it to himself because he believes that he cannot emotionally support Tsuzuki. But I digress, this isn't a Tatsumi/Tsuzuki muse. >.>

In this case, I'm leaning towards bi for Tatsumi. >.>

Watari
Um... For Watari, I cannot tell, period. I can't tell if he's straight, bi or gay. There's just not enough information for us to come to a conclusion on this. He could be straight as he doesn't have a high potentional love interest with any of the Yami male characters, he could be gay if you REALLY look in between the lines (It's possible with Tatsumi at this point. Can't see Watari with Tsuzuki or Hisoka.) I can't tell if he's bi, because there's almost NOTHING in the anime/manga that points in any direction!

Watari has no love interest at ALL. But then again, we know next to NOTHING about his past (Although bits and pieces got revealed a little in the Gensou Kai Arc).

But overall, I absolutely cannot tell. This is completely inconclusive. >.>

Muraki
Despite what people say about him being 100% gay, he's bi. He does love Tsuzuki in his sick, perverted way. It doesn't seem like that in the anime, but in the manga, you get a REALLY different impression about him. If you ignore that, you can't ignore the general relationship that he and Oriya share. He does care about Oriya, he's the ONLY person he treats as an equal.

Now, why do I say bi? Ukyou. Apparently, she's his fiancee. @_@;;; Apparently he DOES care about her too because in his 'death scene' -

Here's your proof (Again, from Theria's site):

Muraki: "Ukyou....."
Muraki: Please forgive me...I...
Muraki: In the end, I couldn't help you...
Muraki: I couldn't do anything...for you...
Muraki: I no longer have any place to return to-------
Muraki: "................"
Muraki: ".......good-bye........Ukyou...."
Muraki: "---------please......please stay well....."
Muraki: For leaving you behind
Muraki: Please---------....
Muraki: Forgive me.........

His last thoughts are of Ukyou. You don't think thoughts like that unless you care for that person, and in Muraki's case, he had to pretty damn well care a LOT about her, considering his character. :D
