[1]
Watari is looking at the pictures of Maria Wong's victims:
"Like from a bloody vampire"/ Like from a vampire

~*~

Konoe agreeing with Tatsumi that the deaths are unexplained:
"You're damn right about that."/ That's right.
Mild swearing seems to be a filler of choice for making up the shortfall in long sentences!

~*~

Konoe about the cinnanon roll:
"Did you get enough for all of us?"/ It looks pretty good

~*~

When they all settle down for the meeting and Tatsumi Explains the Plot, he says the Summons division only looks into people who:
"died of circumstances"/ died in mysterious circumstances

~*~

When Tsuzuki leaves on his mission, the subtitle only says Don't eat too much. But in the dub, Tatsumi says "Well, have a good trip now!" and Watari says "Don't eat too much there, big fella!" (to the tiny chibi Tsuzuki). Most disturbingly, gravel-voiced Gushoshin growls "Toodles"

~*~

On the roof at the beginning of the Wong case, Gushoshin says:
"Would you stop thinking about your stomach for one minute?"/ I wish you'd take things more seriously

~*~

When Hisoka finds out what a dosser Tsuzuki is and jumps up from the table in horror, he says:
"I'm like so out of here"/ I'm getting off here
Poor Hisoka is forcibly rendered into an annoying teenager by the dubbers.

~*~

As Hisoka passes out, the dub has Tsuzuki saying:
"That's my... red wine!"/ That's my...
Western viewers are presumably not considered intelligent enough to work out that liquid which makes you pass out is probably some kind of alcohol.

~*~

After Hisoka has passed out, Tsuzuki says:
"Oh, that's too bad."/ Oh boy
The dub's a bit snarkier there.

~*~

Watching the passed-out Hisoka on his bed, Tsuzuki says:
"Maybe I looked a bit childish... You know, I did look a bit childish."/ Maybe I looked a bit childish.

~*~

Before they go into the TV studio to look for Maria Wong, Tsuzuki says:
"Let's do it"/ Let's go

----------------------------------------------------

[2]
Watari's food slicer is called "Mr Johnson"/ Mr Jason

~*~

When Muraki turns up beside Tsuzuki and the unconscious girl, he says:
"May I be of some assistance?"/ What's the matter?
There's no practical reason for that change, as his lips aren't visible.

~*~

After staring at Muraki, mesmerised, for a while, Tsuzuki says:
"Sure, if you think you can help."/ You're...

~*~

When he and Hisoka are facing off outside the secret documents room, Tsuzuki says in both versions "You don't even realise what you're doing." The dub adds "And you're not going to ask anybody for help, are you?"

~*~

The next bit is really quite different: "You are my partner and we will work together. Understand? Because if we don't do our job, people get hurt." in the dub and You really don't want to be my partner, do you? How are we supposed to get any work done? in the subtitles.

~*~

When they are watching Maria Wong sing, Tsuzuki says:
"All right! Enough of death, let's have a drink."/ Let's have a drink tonight.

~*~

When Tsuzuki tells Hisoka he has to have juice and says "I'm not hauling you off to bed again," in both versions, the dub adds "my little friend!"

----------------------------------------------------

[3]
When Tsuzuki is beating himself up for letting Hisoka be kidnapped, Gushoshin says:
"That's not true"/ Mr Tsuzuki

~*~

When Muraki is fangirling over his dolls, he says:
"They're both so irresistible, it's difficult to decide."/ Which do you prefer?

~*~

In the cafe, Muraki says:
"How many sugars, my friend?"/ How many sugars, Mr Tsuzuki?

~*~

Just before the big fight, Tsuzuki says to Muraki:
"I've had enough of you and your games."/ You're one I'll never forgive.

~*~

When Muraki is going almost gaga with gloating at the climax of the fight, he says:
"I want you to show me, and only me, the sight of you as you fall completely apart, you pathetic fool!"/ Just look at me, Mr Tsuzuki, as you fall apart.
We would like to assure readers that Muraki's Mr T-esque intonation of "you pathetic fool" is one of the worst moments of the entire dub.

----------------------------------------------------

[4]
When the pupils are speculating about what is wrong with Hijiri, there's a subtitle saying  His left eye shines in gold colour at night. which has no counterpart in the dub.

~*~

When Hijiri is having visions of his friends rejecting him, one of them (a male one) calls him "Hi-chan", when it's Hijiri in the subtitles.

----------------------------------------------------

[5]
When they meet in the corridor, Tatsumi tells Hisoka "You seem to be fitting in" in the dub but not the subtitles. Also that he'll "learn a lot along the way".

~*~

Tsuzuki embellishes more on the subject of his curry rice in the dub than in the subtitles: "It's a recipe I've been trying to perfect."

~*~

When Watari checks to see if Tsuzuki has been bitten, he says he wants to see:
"your upper body"/ your body
[Katsue definitely prefers the sub there! ^_~]

~*~

Watari is relieved that there's no mark on Tsuzuki's flesh, and says, "there's nothing there". Tsuzuki responds very differently in the dub - "Well, it's not nothing. Some people actually think I'm attractive." - and the subtitles: Watari, is that how you felt about me?
Was the overt reference to gay attraction too racy for the dub?

----------------------------------------------------

[6]
When Hijiri is enthusing about sightseeing to Hisoka -
"There's so much to see and do here and so little time."/ There are a lot of tourist sites in Amakusa

~*~

When possessed!Tsuzuki is getting the cleaver from the old school caretaker, he says "I've been meaning to get some work done around the house," in the dub, though he adds "I've been wanting to get rid of a small unsightly branch" in both versions.
"Around the house" hardly fits in with the fact that Tsuzuki, in his disguise as a substitute doctor, is at work.

~*~

When Sagaatanus is tormenting Tsuzuki as he showers, the subtitles have  You're not being very nice, Tsuzuki, but the dub leaves that out.

~*~

When possessed!Tsuzuki is groping Hijiri he says:
"I want to take you and consume your body"/ I want your body.
Hey, we like the dub there!
[Katsue prefers  I want your body, especially as it's *Hisoka* he's unwittingly groping! ^__^]

~*~

In the dub only, Watari urges possessed!Tsuzuki to "Get a hold of yourself, man!" when he first turns up to smash JuoOhCho.

~*~

In the subtitles, Hisoka tells possessed!Tsuzuki that  To kill a contractor is the worst crime that you can commit in the netherworld. The dub misses out the word "worst".
Probably a mistake.

----------------------------------------------------

[7]
When Konoe is briefing Tsuzuki and Hisoka on the case, he says:
"This is a very sensitive matter that has to be handled just right."/ Here's what I want.

~*~

Tatsumi assures Tsuzuki:
"We will miss you dearly while we're enjoying your cake for you."/ We will be enjoying your cake for you.

~*~

When faced with the English heavies, Tsuzuki protests:
"I don't understand what you're talking about!"/ Speak to me in Japanese!

~*~

After being hit by the bottle, Tsuzuki says "That's going to leave a mark!" in the dub only

~*~

Muraki describes the wine as  a nice rose that matches your eyes in the subtitles, but in the dub it's "A nice Bordeaux. Tawny, but with a hint of spice."
Give us our loaded hints back!

----------------------------------------------------

[8]
Gazing at the "corpse", Tsuzuki says -
"Something is very wrong"/ I can't believe Muraki is dead

~*~

The medical student character says "Shall I perform the autopsy?" in the dub, but in the subtitles it's  I performed the autopsy.

~*~

Hojo says "Ciao, darling!" to Tsuzuki when he asks her about the ring, instead of  Goodbye as in the subtitles.
OMG, a *woman* flirting with Tsuzuki!

----------------------------------------------------

[9]
When Tsuzuki asks the Chicago gurl Gushoushin how many files are on the microchip, she says:
"I dunno"/ Don't complain to me

~*~

Eileen-in-Tsubaki seems to be protesting against Muraki in particular in the dub, whereas in the subtitles it's more general:
"He forced himself on me and cut me up. I trusted him and he betrayed me! I was completely taken in by him"/ They forced themselves on me and cut me up. What kind of a betrayal was that? I was totally taken in.

~*~

Hisoka waxes lyrical about Muraki to dying Tsubaki in the subtitles:  We're nothing to him but dolls he can throw away. But still you... He only says "We're nothing to him, but still you love him" in the dub.

~*~

When Muraki is standing on the rail of the ship, waiting for the helicopter, there's a subtitle saying  In the past, even he was a man who was dedicated to saving lives. It's spoken by Tsubaki in the Japanese version, but doesn't appear at all in the dub.

~*~

The promo for the Kyoto arc is voiced by Tatsumi in the dub - in the original Japanese it's Muraki.
Suddenly Tatsumi sounds a lot more, shall we say, romantically aggressive!

----------------------------------------------------

[10]
Not only is pseudo-British Watari horrible to listen to, when he's enthusing about Kyoto to Tsuzuki and Hisoka, he appears to be mental as well. Nobody on earth pronounces "potatoes" "pot-ah-tos", Watari.

~*~

However, the dubbers then calm the potential for transatlantic tensions down a bit by changing the subtitles'  inaccurate Kansai accent to "true Kansai accent".

~*~

When Maki is speculating that a ghost might appear, she says:
"Or something like that"/ Creepy, creepy

~*~

Dub Muraki is a little more courteous to Oriya than subtitles Muraki. After asking Oriya to cover up his murderers, he says "I would appreciate it" rather than merely  I appreciate it - which implies Oriya's automatic acquiescence.

~*~

Tsuzuki is marginally less assuming towards Hisoka in the dub when he says -
"You want me to wash your back for you?"/ I'll wash your back for you.
It was probably only changed for lip synch purposes, but this is one of those celebrated subtext moments and should not be messed with...

~*~

When Hisoka refuses, Tsuzuki says -
"I'll go slow"/ You're no fun.
Yay, subtext count definitely up in the dub there!

~*~

After ranting about the state of the inn Tatsumi has booked for them, Tsuzuki adds "I wanted a shower!" in the dub.

~*~

Mad dub Watari talks about "When a scientist of my calibre" does an analysis, as opposed to  when we do one.

~*~

Dub Tsuzuki is more solicitous when Hisoka is out getting the dinner:
"He's been gone a while. I hope he didn't go too far."/ How far did he go?

----------------------------------------------------

[11]
When Tatsumi is giving Hisoka his pep talk in the hotel room, in the dub only he adds at the end: "You can understand what I'm saying, can't you? I know how difficult this is for you."

~*~

When Tatsumi and Tsuzuki are in the souvenir shop, Tatsumi says "There's no reason to feel we stand out" in the dub only.

----------------------------------------------------

[12]
At the end of the opening sequence, Maki thinks "This guy's a Guardian of Death", presumably referring to Tsuzuki, but in the subtitles it's  These guys are Guardians of Death, referring to Tsuzuki and Hisoka.

~*~

When Muraki is remembering Saki laughing at his parents' funeral, he says:
"That's when I knew the true meaning of the word derision"/ That' when I knew the true meaning of that derision in the subtitles.
The dub makes more sense here.

~*~

When Muraki is talking to himself about sending Mariko back with the insect inside her, he says:
"I will return you as promised, Mr Tsuzuki"/ I will return her as promised, Mr Tsuzuki

~*~

The vision of Muraki which triggers the bug inside Mariko to break out describes Tsuzuki as:
"The one you torment"/  The one who tormented you in the subtitles.

----------------------------------------------------

[13]
When he's talking to Oriya about having been programmed, Muraki says:
"This is just what I've become."/ This is what I am

~*~

Giving Hisoka his pep talk on the bridge, Tatsumi rather strangely says "As long as we remember him, we will continue to exist".
Well duh. Sounds like a misread for the subtitle version, which is  As long as we remember him, he will continue to exist.

~*~

When Oriya sees the shinigami coming, he says -
"My dear Guardians of Death"/ My dear Guardians of Death from the land beyond.

~*~

Oriya says to Hisoka about Muraki that a violent man has his reasons:
"even if he's fighting for the same reason as you"/ even he is fighting for the same reason as you.
This time the dub makes more sense.

~*~

After stabbing Muraki, Tsuzuki says:
"I wasn't supposed to exist in this world. I shouldn't have been given human form"/ I wasn't supposed to exist. I shouldn't have been. in the subtitles.
The dub is interestingly explicit, but sadly not canon.

~*~

When Tsuzuki is telling Hisoka he doesn't want to be saved, he says:
"I'm too tired to go any longer,"/ I'm tired.

~*~

When Hisoka throws his arms around Tsuzuki and cries that he doesn't want to be left alone, the dub departs completely from the original. The Japanese audio has Hisoka speaking, the subtitle has Hisoka saying  This is the only place for me, but the dub has *Tsuzuki* thinking (it has to be a thought, you can see his lips aren't moving) "That's a little selfish now, isn't it, Hisoka?"
This is a major change to the tone of the scene. Tsuzuki even sounds slightly arch - a big, big difference to how things play in the original.
[Katsue goes "grrrr" at dubbers]

~*~

"Is it all right for me to be here?" Tsuzuki asks in both versions, presumably to check for certain as Hisoka has just told him exactly that. In the dub, he adds "... in your heart?"
[As the Japanese for "heart" and "here" sound not dissimilar, maybe the dubbers were backing it both ways? ^_~]

~*~

When Tatsumi asks if Tsuzuki is OK about having been saved, Tsuzuki says:
"Thank you, my friend. I owe you my life, Tatsumi."/ Thank you, Tatsumi in the subtitles.
First Tsuzuki snarking at Hisoka in the fire scene, now getting fulsome towards Tatsumi - was this episode dubbed by a Tatsumi/Tsuzuki shipper?
